In this morning’s News and Observer, the lead article is on the lifting of water restrictions in Raleigh from Stage 2 to Stage 1. There’s a quote from Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker: “We’re all very pleased, and I want to say a word of thanks to everyone who’s worked so hard on overcoming this drought.”
I understand his heart in wanting to show appreciation to the employees who have worked hard, BUT… the irony of his statement is quite humorous and sad. Thanking people for working hard to get the rain to fall. Saving water is good stewardship and wise. But if there is one person to thank it is God.
From His sermon on the mount Jesus says, “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matt. 5:45 [show]<div class="esv"><h2>Matthew 5:45 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F40005045" width="40" height="12" class="audio"><param name="movie" value="http://www.esvapi.org/assets/play.swf?myUrl=hw%2F40005045" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></h2>

First of all I like that it is His sun - not the sun. It is also His rain. He is the source, and He sends it. Let us be wise stewards of His rain - conserve water. Let us honor and give thanks to the one who supplies the rain: the one true and living God and His Son Jesus Christ.
