A Good Start for Tiger Woods

Tiger should be given a lot of space and grace. He did an amazing job humbling himself and taking full responsibility for his actions. He wasn’t blame shifting or making excuses. He is deeply sorry.

My heart goes out to Tiger. I’ve been a huge fan. I just wish he got the concept of forgiveness. Tiger said, “I have a lot to atone for.” Although he took full responsibility for his mistakes he never brought up the issue of forgiveness. His goal is to rehabilitate himself so that through being a better person he can atone for what he did wrong and have us believe in him again.

Wow… so very different than the gospel. The gospel says that we do better because we have been forgiven. Our sins are atoned for because of the good actions of someone else – Jesus. Our faith is in God who forgives not in ourselves to do better. Forgiveness is granted because a person humbly asks. Trust is restored because a forgiven person’s actions prove trustworthy.

Bubba Watson tweeted this morning: “Morning All! Tiger speaks today, but we all need to ask forgiveness because we all SIN and make mistakes!! GOD FORGIVES! #loveeveryone ” I love it! God forgives, but forgiveness does need to be asked for. I teach my kids the difference between “I am sorry” and “Will you forgive me?” – big difference!

I am praying for Tiger and his family. So grateful for God’s grace and forgiveness. How I want everyone to experience it. Except for the grace of God, there go I. It’s level ground at the foot of the cross.

This is an incredibly insightful and honest article. Jesus said that you’ll know a tree by its fruit. There is undeniable good fruit that is produced as people walk in the example left by Jesus: meeting practical needs (fighting for social justice) and meeting spiritual needs (preaching the gospel – that salvation is from and through Jesus Christ).

Respecting and Praying for our Leaders

Election day has finally arrived. We will have new leaders in many positions of our government.

As the winners are declared (those we voted for and those we didn’t), it’s our privilege and responsibility to honor, respect, pray for, and follow their leadership.

God is the one who puts in leaders. It’s time to put away the boxing gloves and roll up our sleeves so we can get to work. My prayer is that Christians would be infused with a fresh vision for what God is doing in our land. Our hope is in Him.

I came across this great article today at Forbes.com. The next president will be my president – no matter party affiliation.

Together for the Gospel

Honor God

In this morning’s News and Observer, the lead article is on the lifting of water restrictions in Raleigh from Stage 2 to Stage 1. There’s a quote from Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker: “We’re all very pleased, and I want to say a word of thanks to everyone who’s worked so hard on overcoming this drought.”

I understand his heart in wanting to show appreciation to the employees who have worked hard, BUT… the irony of his statement is quite humorous and sad. Thanking people for working hard to get the rain to fall. Saving water is good stewardship and wise. But if there is one person to thank it is God.

From His sermon on the mount Jesus says, “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matt. 5:45)

First of all I like that it is His sun – not the sun. It is also His rain. He is the source, and He sends it. Let us be wise stewards of His rain – conserve water. Let us honor and give thanks to the one who supplies the rain: the one true and living God and His Son Jesus Christ.

Fun Reminiscing

The Carolina Tar Heels had a good season. Ranked #1 most of the year. Regular ACC champion and ACC tournament champion. Final Four appearance (well sort of…) It’s questionable whether they team showed up or some frat boys stole their uniforms. It wasn’t the team we’ve been watching all year. Tough loss last night against Kansas. Roy Williams looked shell shocked. I can’t believe he didn’t call a timeout until they were down by 26. How bad does it have to get until you call a timeout and regroup?

Last week a friend sent me about 7 links to YouTube videos of the greatest basketball player who ever played (in my humble and probably slanted view). He also happens to have been a Carolina basketball player.

Google strikes again with Google Short Message Service

Another very cool techie tool from Google. It’s a free service for receiving text messages on your cell phone. Simple send a text message to: 46645. Then put your inquiry into the body of the text message. You can get phone listing, movies times, stock quotes, word definitions, sports scores, pricing on an iPod, etc. Very impressive and free. It just counts toward your text message total that you receive from your cell phone carrier.
