Three minor girls were rescued early morning yesterday at the Pune train station. Freedom Firm operatives, acting on information from IJM in Kolkata, mobilized Pune police officers to rescue the girls and arrest the four traffickers as they left the train station. A brothel owner seen awaiting these girls at the train station went away empty handed but was arrested later.

This is our third rescue in four weeks.

Reuters ran an article yesterday “To fight prostitution, some say target clients.” This is a key strategy change. For years prostitutes have been criminals while the men buying sex have walked away. We’ve targeted the supply not the demand. The strategy has not worked. If there is demand, then those wanting to make money will come up with supply – one way or another. Tragically, literally millions of girls around of the world have been violated and forced into prostitution.

Many women (or young girls) in prostitution are not there by choice. They are victims of modern day slavery. Often they’ve been promised a job, tricked into crossing international borders, and forced into a life of prostitution. The article states that “some 85 percent of women found working in British brothels are estimated to be from outside Britain, a reversal from 10 years ago when 85 percent of them were British citizens.” This a pretty radical and recent trend.

To fight prostitution and modern day slavery, we need a change of perspective. We need to rescue prostituted girls and prosecute buyers of sex. This “paradigm shift” is working. Sweden outlawed buying sex in 1999. They have seen significant change.

Be part of the solution: get educated and lift up your voice for those who cannot. “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” (Psa 82:3-4)

Last night a group of us from Grace Church had dinner and spent the evening with Linda Smith from Shared Hope International. Linda is a marvelous woman who has given her life to ending sex trafficking in the United States and around the world. It was a sobering and inspiring evening hearing what is going on in the world of sex trafficking, and what efforts are being made to put it to an end.

I believe that local churches and Christians should be in the lead to make a difference. We’ve come up with several ideas on next steps.

Linda is speaking today at UNC’s conference “Combating Sex Trafficking: Prevention and Intervention in North Carolina and Worldwide.”. It’s at the Friday Center. Yesterday was great (today is day 2). Some amazing speakers who really are working hard to make a difference around the world.

Shared Hope released a report this week on sex trafficking in Las Vegas.

News coverage on Las Vegas report

(By the way, don’t think this is a Las Vegas problem. It happens right in Chapel Hill and Durham).

Shared Hope has a lot of great resources on their website:

Shared Hope International

We can make a difference!
